As the third marking period draws to a close, ASK testing is drawing nearer. Here are some strategies to help your child develop his thinking skills. There are at least 6 different thinking skills that the students need to develop. They can develop these skills by asking certain types of questions.
The 6 different thinking skills are:
1. Knowledge
2. Comprehension
3. Application
4. Analysis
5. Synthesis
6. Evaluation
To develop knowledge the students should ask questions using words like what, when, where, and how many.
Comprehension involves understanding of a deeper meaning-What were the causes of the Civil War? Or How does a caterpillar change into a butterfly.
Application-to be able to use what they learn in real life situations.
Analysis-compare, contrast, classify, and arrange.
Synthesis-Combine ideas from several areas to form a new concept.
Evaluation-The child should be encouraged to consider an idea and explain it in his own words.
Developing thinking skills will not only benefit the child during the State testing, but throughout life.
Happy Spring!
