Mrs. Hoffman
Second Grade

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and a relaxing break.
I would like to thank all of the parents who helped out with the holiday party. Thank you to those who sent in money and snacks for the pizza party and to those who were able to come in and help. The children really enjoyed themselves as always. I would also like to thank everyone for the holiday greeting cards and gifts. I appreciate your thoughtfulness and generosity.
This month we will be learning about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the significance his life had on our country. The children will be participating in many activities to help them learn more about this great hero.
We are continuing to work in Chapter 6 on subtraction with regrouping. Please continue to practice basic facts at home and review the rules of regrouping.
Writing has been a huge focus this year. The students are learning to use the "Six Traits of Writing" as well as the four square method to improve their writing and become more advanced writers. I am so proud of how they are really applying the skills they are learning and always trying to make their writing better! This month we will be learning how to write comparitive essays. The students will learn to compare and contrast two things and then write an essay about them.
Our star student program continues to bring us fun and exciting activities in our classroom. The children are enjoying learning about their classmates and having visitors come to our classroom. Thank you to Mrs. Marsh for making a craft with our class, Mrs. Grimley for making reindeer food with us and reading Christmas stories, and Mr. and Mrs. Antonelli for playing games with us and sharing a special treat. We sure are a lucky class to have such great parents and students!
Book in a bag and our Pizza Hut Book-It programs are going very well. I am proud of all the students who have participated so far. You're doing a great job with the book reports. Please remember: book in a bag is due on FRIDAY!
Please continue to sign your child's assignment book and check their homework folder nightly for graded papers, class work, homework, and important notices.
Thank you again for all your support. If you have any questions or concerns at any time about your child's education, please feel free to contact me via letter, email, or phone.
