First Grade

We are now in the month of March, excited for the arrival of spring! This month will bring many exciting things to our classroom.
In Language Arts, we will be continuing to work on different comprehension and decoding strategies. We will be learning how to use things like drawing conclusions and sequencing to make meaning from text. In phonics, we will be finishing up strategies to learn to decode r-controlled vowel and inflectional endings. We will then begin to explore more long vowel sound patterns. The week of March 15th-19th will be our Review/Unit Test week. Please remember that we will have no new spelling or vocabulary words during this week.
In Math this month we will be starting by learning addition and subtraction strategies for facts to 20. The children have been doing a wonderful job learning their facts to 12! Please continue to practice facts with them at home. Near the end of the month, we will start to explore the concept of time. Start having your child explore telling time to the hour and half hour.
There are going to be many exciting events this month. Dr. Seuss day will be taking place on March 2nd. That whole week we will be listening to stories written by Dr. Suess and learning more about his life. We will also be getting ready to celebrate St. Patrick's Day by writing stories about our own leprechauns. We will finish off the month by beginnning to explore the beginning of spring and discussing the changes that occur with Spring's arrival.
Our "Star of the Week" program is going in full swing. A paper will come home the week before you child's turn with information about posters and visitations.
