Second Grade

Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful holiday and a relaxing winter break.

I would like to thank all of the parents who sent in snacks and supplies for our holiday party. The children really enjoyed the delicious pancake breakfast! Thank you to our Head Room Mom for coordinating the party and for the room moms who volunteered their time to help out at the party.

This month we will begin Unit 3 in our reading series. We will work on reading strategies such as identifying problem and solution, making inferences, using context clues, using schema, creating mental images, identifying cause and effect, and identifying and using synonyms and antonyms. These skills will help the students to better comprehend what they read. In grammar, we will continue to learn about parts of speech. We will focus on action verbs and present-tense and past-tense verbs. In phonics, we will be introduced to words with silent letters. We will also work on decoding and reading words with /ea/ (as in head) and /er/ (as in letter). Please continue to review papers that are sent home with your child each night in order to reinforce what was learned that day.

In math, we will be working on two-digit addition and subtraction with regrouping. We will also continue to work on becoming more proficient with our math facts through games and fact drills. Please continue to practice addition and subtraction facts at home. The children will truly benefit from even just a few minutes of practice a day.
Our Star Student program is in full swing and going well. The children are really enjoying learning about their classmates! Keep in mind that you are welcome to visit our class to read a story or present a career on the Friday of your child’s Star Student week. If the week your child chose is not convenient for you, please let me know and I will be glad to choose another week that will coordinate with your schedule. Thank you to the parents who visited our classroom in December during their child’s Star Student week. The children truly enjoyed your visits!

The children are doing a great job reading their books for the Book in a Bag program. They seem to be really enjoying the stories. It is so great to see the excited looks on their faces each week when they pick out their new books. Please make sure your child returns their Book in a Bag on Friday so he or she can bring home a new book on the following Tuesday.
