I hope you all had a very enjoyable holiday and a great start to 2009! Now we are back at school and faced with getting through the cold winter months!
This month, I would like you to work on listening skills with your child. Take a trip around your house to listen for sounds such as: ticking clocks, wash machine, dryer, dish washer, hairdryer, running water, vacuum cleaner, electric toothbrush, music, etc. Listen for sounds coming from outside such as sirens, airplanes, helicopters, cars, trucks, and motorcycles. Talk about the sounds being loud or quiet, or scary, or welcoming, etc. If you can, record these sounds and see if your child can identify the sound without seeing the object making the sound. Record family members and friends saying the same thing and see if your child can identify them just by their voices.
Play a barrier game - After showing your child the sound that can be made with an object, put these objects behind a barrier and then have your child identify the sound without the visual aids(bell, running your finger across the teeth of a comb, crumpling paper, ripping off a piece of tape, stapling, cutting with scissors, pouring cheerios into a bowl, etc.
Remember, it is very important to read to your child everyday. In this way you are creating a love of books and learning, and helping to develop thinking skills and language skills. This is crucial to becoming competent readers. Talk about the pictures in the book and ask simple who, what, where, when, and why questions as you go along.
If you have any questions, concerns, or comments throughout the year, please feel free to email me, send a note in your child's folder, or call 697-0941. I will respond as soon as possible.
