Dear Parents and Students,

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a safe and relaxing holiday break. I would like to thank all of the parents who were involved with our holiday party. The children really enjoyed it. I would also like to thank everyone for the cards, thoughts and gifts. It was truly kind of you to think of me during the holidays.

In Reading, we have starting a new unit called “Express Yourself.” We will be learning about fantasy and reality, context clues, synonyms, and cause and effect. In grammar, we will be learning about verbs. Please remember to review papers that are sent home with your child daily.

In Math, we are beginning Chapter 6 on “Subtracting 2-Digit Numbers.” The goals of this chapter is to promote mastery of subtraction of 2-digit numbers, introduce subtraction of money amounts, build an understanding of using addition to check subtraction, and develop and apply problem solving skills. Please continue to go over math homework each night with your child and also continue to review addition and subtraction facts. The more the students practice their facts, the easier it will be!

As part of our Social Studies curriculum, this month we will be discussing the achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Throughout the month you may want to ask your child what he or she has learned about Dr. King.

We are continuing our Star Student of the Week program. The children enjoy learning about other students in the class and having a family member visit them. I sent out a list telling you which week your child will be Star Student. As it gets closer to your child’s date, I will send home a form to be filled out for your child. Thank you to all of the parents who have visited so far. We appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedule to be with us!

Below you will find some educational links that will be helpful for your child.
