Mrs. Rambone's Snowy 5th Grade Class
News from Room 63

Thanks for visiting my webpage this month!
Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a joyous holiday. I also hope that everyone got a well-deserved rest and is ready to finish out the second marking period with even greater academic achievement! Again, please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.
We have concluded our Drug Abuse and Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) lessons with the students writing essays about what they have learned. Officer Piper of the Township of Franklin Police Force taught the students valuable lessons about how to resist illegal drugs and violence. The students will be graduates of D.A.R.E. following presentation of certificates during an evening ceremony on February 19th.
Here are some highlights of what we will be learning in our other subjects in the month of January.
Reading:
We will be finishing out Unit 3 with two selections, “Going Back Home”, and “A Mountain of a Monument” (nonfiction).
Grammar:
We will continue to explore all aspects of “verbs”. The students' mastery of writing continues as we compose our next composition, a persuasive essay on the subject of DARE. We will also begin to work with “practice” standardized tests in order that the students will be well prepared for testing in the spring.
Spelling:
As always, we’ll be learning new words from our five current unit selections. In addition, we’ll learn words with ou, oi, u, yu, sh, ch, -ed, and –ing as well as words from the arts.
SCIENCE:
In Chapter B2, “Investigating Motion”, we will find the answers to the questions “How is motion measured?”, “What effects motion?”, “How does gravity affect motion?”, and “How does friction affect motion?”.
Social Studies:
We will continue our study of United States history with our next unit, “Colonial Life in North America”, in which we will learn about life in the English colonies and the fights that occurred on the continent. Now would be a good time for you to “get hooked” on “Liberty’s Kids”, an excellent cartoon series that deals with early American history. Check your local television listing for times and channels. There is also a “Liberty’s Kids” website that you can visit.
Health:
We are continuing in our book, “Building a Healthy Body”, in which we learn about food and activity for a healthy body and protecting ourselves against disease.
