Mr. Carr's Sixth Grade Class - January
Working to Make the Most Out of Each Day

It's the start of a new year, and a perfect time to set new goals and work even harder to achieve them. Whether you're hoping to improve, or working to continue the success you've found so far, let's make 2009 the best school year yet.
In our Math classes, we are continuing our work of the current unit, "Bits and Pieces." Students have been exploring the relationships between fractions, decimals, and percents. By identifying fractions as a part-to-whole quantity, students will then be able to convert between decimals and percents. These math operations are everywhere in the real world, from placing 1/3 cup of chocolate chips in their favorite cookies, to determining if they have enough money for that new game that is 25% off. Understanding these concepts will allow the students to see the value of mathematics in their lives.
In Social Studies, students will be investigating major eras of influential change in our nation's early history. We are exploring the important, and often saddening, history of Native Americans during the expansion of the United States. Advancements in industry and transportation also were key factors in the evolution of early America. Students are seeing the importance of history, and how our past has affected the country in which we live in today.
In Science, students are fininshing up their exploration of how various species of plants and animals change and adapt in order to survive successfully in the environment around them. We will be using this understanding of individual plants and animals in order to expand our search into the biomes in which these species live. Students will idenitfy the relationships and dependence that all living things share with the world around us.
I continue to wish everyone the best of luck in reaching their full potential. Thanks for checking in, and as always, feel free to get a hold of me whenever you need anything.
