JANUARY 2009 HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO FOLKS BORN IN JANUARY, as well as Mrs. Willis on the 7th, George on the 4th, Casey on the 21st, and Olivia on the 8th!! Welcome back from the Winter Holidays. A Happy New Year to all! I know the sts. were unhappy that we did not have snow for the vacation, but I am sure we will have some before the winter is over! REMEMBER..... If your child has a scratchy throat due to allergies or a cold, you can send them in with cough drops or throat lozenges. You must have your child give them to the nurse, Mrs. Clevenger-Bell. They can go down to her office during the day, if they need one. The temperatures vary from room to room. If your child would like to wear a zip-up sweatshirt over their t-shirt to class, that is fine.
GENERAL INFORMATION -
I hope having the Spelling Study pages at home are helping.
TEST-TAKING ROUTINE FOR SPELLING WORDS!!!!Each Friday, your children will bring home a homework sheet on which they will write their new words 5x's each... A grade will be taken. During the week sts. will practive writing their new words 3xs each night. Students will have the opportunity be tested on all 20 words on Thursdays, just one test during the week as they show improvement. We take 2 styles of Spelling tests: Dictation and Multiple-Choice, which I like to call, The Bubble Test(you will see it referred to as such, in the homework book!). These 2 formats, allow each child a chance, to do their best, as everyone has areas of specific strengths, when it comes to test-taking!! (smile). In Grammar/English class, your child will most always have a study packet come home on Thursdays, with the skill they have worked on for the week. Fridays will (most) always be their test day in Grammar. In Reading class, your child will most always have story vocabulary sentences to do as homework, on Tuesday evening. I am looking for good descriptive sentences, not just a repeat of the definitions. Wednesdays, they will most always have an oral quiz on the pronunciation of these words. Students will also have a leveled book story go home each Monday with questions that are due on Fridays. At the end of each month, you will see a large mustard-colored clasp envelope come home. It will contain completed work. Please keep the work, and sign and return the envelope... we will reuse them, at the end of each Reading Unit, to send home completed work in Reading, Spelling, and English. You can use the completed work packets as study guides, for the Unit Reading Tests. Again, you will be able to keep the work, and asked to sign and return the envelopes, for future use. Your children have gotten homework/assignment books again this year. These books are our primary source of communication between home and school. Each and every day they will come home, to be looked at jointly, by you and your child, any work assigned done, signed by you, and returned the next day. My work will be written down, I will initial the book, so you know that the assignment is correct, and the cycle of home/school connection will be successfully completed.(smile)Thanks!! Whenever you have something you need me to know the next day, please jot me a quick note in the HW book, and I will get back to you as soon as possible, during the day. If you do not have a chance to jot something down, but feel there is something important I should know, you can always call the school, at 697-0220, and our secretary, Mrs. Darcy, will contact me. I have a school e-mail address, which I endeavor to check daily; Lpaolella@franklintwpschools.org
You can contact me this way too. Please be aware that at times there are technical difficulties, and the mail does not get through...SO, the homework book and/or telephone message to the secretary is your surest bet. Also, my prep time, as it stands now, is after lunch, so if your question or request needs immediate attention, the phone call is the best option.
Homework-(This is for ALL subjects) Please have your child show you what they have done in class each night when homework is assigned. If they have gotten a certain problem/part/sentence wrong, please help them to see the mistake, and have them re-do the work. I am not saying that you should "do" it for them, but any extra reinforcement is such a help to them. You can even make up more of the same type of problems for your child to do. If you choose to do this, send in the paper, and your child can get extra points!Skills for DECEMBER-

Web Sites for Math and Reading::http://familyeducation.com/home/ This has lessons, games, and advice for children in all grade levels from pre K throught high school. Very informative www.aplusmath.com This has flashcards, games, homework helper, and worksheets. www.edu4kids.com/math This has flashcards, drill, money and time http://readingcomprehensionconnection.com/lesson.html This has reading comprehension, vocabulary and grammar practice for levels beginning with grade 5 Thanks in advance, for your help at home with checking homework books and homework. My students have reviewed and practiced homework book usage. The students have been shown how to put their daily dates in their books. Some sts. find that doing their dates for a week at a time, helps them stay better organized. Most of my sts. are able to remember... please check to see if your child is one of them, and if so, congratulations to them!!... However, if you see their dates done in red pen, that means that my aide has had to do it for them. I would ask that you encourage/help your child work toward doing this task on their own. If they forget at home, as soon as they enter their homerooms, they can look at their class calendar, or date that is written on the board.Thanks.
Sincerely,Miss Paolella
