It was a privilege teaching your children this past year. This class will always be special to me, as this is the year I leave third grade and prepare to teach fifth grade. Each child brought his/her own unique talents, gifts, and personalities to the class and helped to create our special learning community. Your children have demonstrated tremendous progress and growth this year and have worked hard to learn many new things. You should be very proud of them! I truly appreciated your help and support this year, whether it was sending in snacks for a celebration, reading a book, or faithfully checking your child's assignment book each night. Your involvement and participation in your children's education makes all the difference in their success. |
I hope you and your families enjoy a beautiful, safe, and refreshing summer. |

To my new 4th graders: The sky's the limit - dream BIG and shoot for the stars! |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The following is an outline for the remainder of the year: |
Reading: Our theme for unit five is "Cultures." In this unit, we will read and discuss what happens when two walks of life come together. As we read, we will focus on cause and effect relationships, author's purpose, drawing conclusions, making generalizations, comparing and contrasting, and making inferences. |
Open book reading comprehension tests will be given each Friday. Each week, the story of the week will be introduced and read aloud on Monday, partner read during the week, and assigned to be read on Thursday night to prepare for Friday's reading test. Friday's reading test will also include the weekly vocabulary words. Reading with your child will help increase fluency and comprehension of the reading selection. |
Look for the "Family Times" newsletter to be sent home each Monday that includes a summary of the story of the week, a list of the weekly vocabulary words, and a description of the grammar skills to be introduced, taught, and assessed that week. |
Grammar/Writing: In Grammar students will be learning about various types of adjectives, adverbs, and conjunctions. These grammar skills will help improve students' writing as we apply taught skills to our writing assignments. The Grammar and Writing workbook will be sent home each Thursday night for students to complete and review for Friday's assessment. |
In writing we will use the Four Square technique to help us plan our writing and improve our organizational skills. We will focus on the six traits of writing to enhance students' writing skills and use journals to help students become more comfortable and fluent expressing themselves in writing. |
In the fourth marking period, we will focus more on using writing rubrics to self-assess our strengths and weaknesses as we strive to improve our communication skills in our written work. |
We will save some of students' best work each marking period in writing portfolios so you will get to see the amazing strides your children have made from September to June. |
Spelling: A list of twenty new spelling words will be given out each Monday. Weekly spelling tests are given on Fridays. Please look for the new list of words to be sent home each Monday night so that students may prepare for Friday's test. Spellingcity.com is an excellent site for your child to insert weekly words into engaging games and activities. |
Math: We have now moved on to Chapter 10 - Division with Remainders. Students are currently dividing one-three digit numbers with remainders and estimating quotients. Students have made excellent progress in long division since we started in May. We will finish the year with long division and a comprehensive review of past taught skills. |
It would be helpful if you reviewed multipliction tables with your child over the summer to keep skills sharp for fourth grade. Multiplication.com, aplusmath.com, IXL.com, and various other math websites are fun sites to keep skills fresh. |
Please check your child's folder for math homework Monday - Wednesday. |
Science: We are currently studying Chapter 3, Unit A -- Living Things and Their Environments. Students will learn about various organisms' habitats, adaptations, and food chains. Students recently presented their diorama projects to the class - they did a wonderful job!! |
Social Studies: Students are currently learning about various inventions and inventions and how inventions have impacted our lives. |
Health: In health, students will examine character and the importance of developing positive character traits. We will discuss self- concept, making responsible decisions, and how good character counts! |
Penmanship: We are practicing writing upper case letters in the month of June. |
Help get your child hooked on reading: |
Reading reinforces both your child's reading and writing skills. Read with your child each day -- the students enjoy voting on the class read aloud and look forward to hearing a chapter each day. Also, look for the Scholastic Book Order to be sent home each month so you can add to your child's personal collection. |
Please check your child's assignment book each night for homework and upcoming tests/assignments. The assignment books and group e-mails are excellent and convenient sources of parent/teacher communication. As always, I encourage you to contact me with any questions or concerns. |
Thank you for a wonderful year, Stacey Shute ~ |
