Mrs. Grochowski & Mrs. Reilly
Our Third Grade Class

Happy New Year! Thanks for all of your donations that made our Christmas Party. Also, thank you to those parents who were able to attend and lend a hand. We hope everyone enjoyed their time off.

Let's look at the month ahead...

READING:
Unit three in our reading series is called People and Nature. Students will learn how people and nature are connected. At the beginning of each week look for the Family Times page in your child's folder. You'll have family activities to help your child with the weekly story, comprehension skills, vocabulary, grammar skills, and spelling words. AT HOME: Read the weekly story aloud to practice fluency and study vocabulary words.

GRAMMAR:
All types of verbs be studied in this unit. Students will use these skills in their daily work and to practice writing paragraphs that compare and contrast. IN SCHOOL: Write in your journal each day.

SPELLING:
A weekly spelling list will be sent home on Monday. Words will be tested on Friday. A Spelling Bee will be held at the end of each unit. AT HOME: Practice spelling words.

MATH:
We are beginning to work on our multiplication facts. At the same time, we will be working on skills in Chapter 4. Word problems are a part of our lessons each day. AT HOME: Practice your multiplication facts for speed and accuracy using the weekly set that is sent home. Timed tests will be given every Friday for each set.

HEALTH:
RESPECT is our next pillar in Character Counts. Students will learn the qualities of a respectful person.

SCIENCE:
We are finishing up our unit on weather. We will then be learning about planets. Activities and projects will make our science units exciting.

SOCIAL STUDIES:
Students will be learning about communities near and far. This month we'll be learning about Martin Luther King and other African American achievers.

PENMANSHIP:
Students are excited about learning cursive writing. We'll begin with the lower case letters. AT HOME: Practice basic strokes and letters.

ASSIGNMENT BOOK AND FOLDER:
Please review your child's homework folder and assignment book/sheet each day for assignments, projects, and test dates. Checking and signing on a daily basis is helpful. Use this sheet as a means of communicating with us.
