Welcome back to school!
We're excited as we begin a new school year. During the month of September we'll spend time getting to know one another and our new school along with reviewing classroom procedures. We'll be doing many exciting activities as we "SADDLE UP FOR SUCCESS." A great year lies ahead...READING
Each week we'll be reading an exciting new story in our Reading Street series, and concentrating on some new skills that will help us become more fluent readers. These stories will be funny, scary, and real-life adventures. Let's make reading fun!
GRAMMAR/WRITING
Throughout this school year we'll be concentrating on many new grammar skills like the correct usage of nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. We'll use these skills to help improve our daily writing. We'll also be emphasizing the six traits of good writing. Parents, please remind your child to use these traits to put a little "SPICE" in their weekly writing pieces. WRITE'EM COWBOY!SPELLING
Remember to study and practice using your spelling words each week. Because we all learn in different ways, practice using the method that works best for YOU! A spelling test will be given each Friday. All 100's will be displayed on "OUR BEST IN THE WEST" bulletin board for everyone to see!MATH
Watch math come alive with our new SMARTBOARD lessons! Some of the concepts we'll cover are: place value, money, measurement, time, geometry, fractions, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Problem solving skills are a part of each lesson. Remember to spend time each night drilling and practicing basic facts for speed and accuracy.SCIENCE
Like scientists, we'll be studying topics such as the animal and plant kingdoms, the solar system, volcanoes, matter, forces, and the human body. Activities, experiments, and projects will make all our units exciting!SOCIAL STUDIES
Communities is our theme for the school year. We'll be learning about communities in our country and around the world. Map skills are also a part of our weekly lessons. We're also keeping up with current events in our country and the world by reading our Time for Kids Magazine.HEALTH
This year our Health program will include learning about what makes a healthy lifestyle. We'll also learn how to have good character through our Character Counts lessons. Be sure to show GOOD character each day to your classmates and teachers because CHARACTER COUNTS!PENMANSHIP
We're all excited about learning cursive writing! Each day we'll practice our cursive letters and their connections in words.
A NOTE TO PARENTS
Please review your child's MONDAY FOLDER and assignment sheet each week for assignments, projects, and test dates. Help your child by checking to make sure their homework is completed, their pencils are sharpened, and all their books and supplies are in their schoolbags. Remind them to return their FOLDER with their LEVELED BOOK and WRITTEN PARAGRAPH every Friday. Most importantly, just talk to your child about their day. It's the little things that make a big difference. Thank you for your daily help and support. Together we can make this a "ROOTIN' TOOTIN' YEAR!"
