Welcome to our web page! Happy 2009 to everyone and here's hoping this year will be a happy and healthy one! A special thanks goes out to all the parents who made our Christmas Breakfast so much fun! I would also like to thank everyone for the beautiful gifts and cards. They were very much appreciated!
Here's an outline of what we'll be working on in each of our
subjects this month.
READING
We are starting the new year with a new unit in Language Arts. In Unit 3, we will read stories that encourage us to "Be Creative." Students can improve their fluency by rereading our story of the week at home with Mom or Dad. Drill and practice new vocabulary words every night so you're ready for the quiz on Friday.
GRAMMAR
Unit Three has us working with verbs. We will practice using all types of verbs in our writing. We are also learning how to add "spice" to our writing to make it more enjoyable to our audience.
SPELLING
Weekly spelling tests will be given on Friday. Remember to practice and study your words every night.
MATH
We are working in Chapter 4 on Telling Time and Graphing along with starting our study of multiplication. Get off to a great start by studying your new multiplication facts at home each night. We will continue to use the skills we learn to help us solve problems using the four-step process. Remember to drill and practice subtraction facts every night to increase speed and accuracy.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Communities is our theme for the year. We will learn about communities in our country and around the world. We will see what makes them the same and different.
SCIENCE
Just like scientists, we are studying Our Solar System. We are learning about our sun and its affect on Earth, the position of our planets in the solar system, what makes night and day, and why we have seasons. Our units can be more interesting to the students by following up at home with discussions, projects, experiments, and a good book you can find on the topic.
HEALTH
Our Health lessons this year will concentrate on what's important for a healthy lifestyle. We will study safety, nutrition, dental health, medicines and drugs, our body, and Character Counts.
PENMANSHIP
This year we are learning all of our cursive letters and their connections in words. We are starting with the lowercase letters. Try to practice your letters each day.
PARENTS:
Remember to review your child's homework assignment book and folder each night. This is the best way to keep on top of assignments, tests, and projects. Sign the book when your child has completed all of his or her homework. You can help your child be more successful by helping them keep their folders organized, pencils sharpened, and schoolbags backed with their books and supplies for the next day. These little things really make a difference! Thanks in advance for your help and support!
